Colombia Prepares for the Arrival of More American Migrants in 2025
2025-04-02
In 2024 and so far in 2025, the digital nomad visa has attracted a large number of American citizens to Colombia. Most are men between the ages of 24 and 35 who have visited Medellín, Bogotá, or Cali and now wish to extend their stay for another year, as their remote work for a foreign company allows them to do so. However, this visa is only temporary and does not grant residency. Their stay in the country remains non-permanent unless they establish deeper roots in Colombia by marrying a Colombian national, investing in the country, or securing a job with a Colombian company.
And many of them are doing just that—and they’re not alone. A new trend has emerged since Trump's return to the U.S. presidency: more American citizens are seeking to live in Colombia. "In recent months, our firm has been overwhelmed with requests from Americans seeking legal assistance to live in Colombia. They want to move here for the landscapes, the culture, and because their income and assets allow them to maintain a lifestyle they could never afford in the United States. Many are deeply pessimistic about the future cost of living in their home country," explains Camila Ocampo, an expert immigration attorney and director of Colombian Passport.
Although official public sources on immigration to Colombia have not been updated since 2022, we have confirmed this trend through Google search statistics (see image), which show that searches for "Moving to Colombia" have increased by 120% since November last year and have maintained this upward trend into 2025.
This immigration movement to Colombia contrasts with the emigration of Colombians abroad. In 2024, approximately 342,000 Colombians emigrated and did not return—a high figure but one that has been steadily decreasing since 2023.
