Colombia Visa & Immigration Update: March 2026 (Post-Election Report)
2026-03-10
With the 2026 legislative elections now behind us, the dust has settled, and the message for expats and digital nomads is clear: It is business as usual for Colombian immigration.
If you were waiting for the "right time" to start your application, that time is now. Here is what you need to know about the current state of visas and residency as of March 10, 2026.
1. Borders and Offices are Fully Operational
The temporary border closures for the elections have ended. All land and river crossings, as well as Migración Colombia offices, are back to their standard schedules. If you were planning an "in-country" visa application or a border run, you can proceed without restrictions.
2. The 2026 Financial Thresholds
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) continues to apply the 2026 minimum wage (SMMLV) of $1,746,882 COP to all income-based visas.
Digital Nomad Visa (V): Requires $5,240,646 COP monthly (approx. $1,450 USD to stay safe from exchange rate drops).
Pensioner Visa (M): Also requires $5,240,646 COP monthly.
Important: Remember that Cancillería does not average your income. Each of the last three bank statements must individually meet this requirement.
3. Why Accuracy Matters More Than Ever
While the laws haven't changed, the scrutiny from officials has. At Colombian Passport, we’ve noticed that officials are increasingly strict about:
Health Insurance: It must be an international policy with specific "repatriation" coverage. Local EPS is still a trigger for automatic rejection.
Passport Validity: If your passport expires soon, your visa might be shortened to match that date.
4. Camila Ocampo’s Insider Tip:
"Don't let the headlines distract you. The technical requirements for your visa are your only real hurdle. In 2026, the key to an approved visa isn't who won the election, but how clean your bank statements and insurance policy look."
