Complete Guide to the Colombian Tourist Visa (2026): Requirements, Costs, and Process

2026-07-07

Colombia has established itself as one of the world's most attractive destinations for leisure, relaxation, and cultural interest. However, immigration regulations under Resolution 5477 of 2022 are highly rigorous for foreign citizens whose passports do not hold a visa-exemption agreement with the country.

At Colombian Passport, we are an Immigration Law firm specializing in resolving complex cases. If your nationality requires you to obtain a Type V Tourist Visa, this article will provide you with everything the law demands, the updated financial thresholds for 2026, and a step-by-step guide to applying successfully.

1. Who Is Legally Required to Apply for This Visa?

Unlike citizens of exempt countries (such as the United States, Canada, or the European Union, who can enter with just a passport stamp), the tourist Visa is required for the following countries:

  • A - C: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, China, Comoros, Congo (Republic of the Congo), Cuba, Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire).

  • D - I: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini (Swaziland), Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel.

  • J - M: Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma).

  • N - R: Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Palestine, Rwanda.

  • S - Z: Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tonga, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

2. Legal Requirements (Articles 31 and 34)

For the government to approve a Type V Tourist Visa, the applicant must apply under their own legal responsibility and strictly comply with three pillars: a purchased travel itinerary, international medical insurance, and highly verifiable financial solvency.

General Requirements:

  • A copy of the main page of your passport (must be valid for at least 6 months).

  • A recent digital color photo with a white background (4x3 cm, face and ears completely visible, JPG format, max 300 KB). Note: This must be a current photo and different from the one in your passport or previous visas.

  • If you are already in Colombia, a copy of your last entry stamp, extension of stay, or safe-conduct pass.

Specific Tourist Requirements:

  1. Financial Solvency (The strictest filter): Article 31 requires demonstrating the applicant's financial capacity through bank statements corresponding to the six (6) months prior to the application. The law requires proving a monthly income of no less than ten (10) minimum legal monthly wages.

    • Official calculation for 2026: With the current minimum wage set at $1,746,882 COP, your bank statements must certify a demonstrable monthly income of at least $17,468,820 COP (or its equivalent in dollars, approximately $4,300 - $4,500 USD depending on the exchange rate) for each of the last 6 months.

  2. Purchased Travel Package and Itinerary: You must present a complete reservation of your entry and exit flight tickets, as well as hotel reservations or the purchased tour package.

  3. Written Communication: A detailed letter drafted by the applicant stating their full identification and thoroughly explaining the schedule, duration, location, and the specific cultural or leisure activities they will undertake in Colombia.

  4. Criminal Records: A judicial or police background check issued by the authority of the country where you have resided for the last three (3) years, duly apostilled or legalized, and officially translated into Spanish.

  5. International Health Policy: Medical insurance with coverage within the national territory against all risks (accident, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, or repatriation) for the entire planned duration of your stay.

3. Total Process Costs (2026)

When planning your trip, you must account for the mandatory fees paid to the Colombian government as well as operational costs:

Government Fees:

  • Visa Study Fee: $54 USD (paid online on the day the application is submitted).

  • Visa Issuance Fee: $82 USD (paid only if the visa is approved).

Other Anticipated Costs:

  • Hotels, airline tickets, and specifications of your contracted travel plans.

  • International health insurance policy meeting the mandated repatriation requirements.

  • Financial costs for the international transfer of capital.

  • Apostilles and official Spanish translations (approximately $20 USD per page).

4. Application and Process: What to Expect?

The application is processed 100% digitally through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' SITAC platform. While you are not legally required to hire an attorney, the platform is notoriously confusing and not user-friendly.

Once the documents are uploaded, the Ministry has up to 30 days to review the case, issuing one of the following responses:

  • Requirement (Requerimiento): The official requests clarifications or extra documents. You have only 10 days to respond, or the application is closed.

  • Inadmission (Inadmisión): The application is rejected due to formatting errors or insufficient funds. The study fee ($54 USD) is lost, and you must start the process from scratch.

  • Rejection (Rechazo): A severe penalty. The application is formally denied, and you will not be able to apply for any Colombian visa for 6 months.

  • Approval (Aprobación): Success! Your e-visa is issued. This visa is valid for up to 1 year, allowing you to stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days (extendable for another 90). The absolute, non-extendable limit is 180 total days per year. (Note: This visa strictly prohibits working and does not allow for beneficiaries).

5. Why Hire a Colombian Immigration Lawyer?

Basically, because the bureaucracy, poor platform usability, shifting interpretations of requirements, and broad discretion of government officials mean that applying for a Visa in Colombia demands a level of technical and legal expertise that a foreigner shouldn't have to deal with.

It is highly likely that your first or second application will be inadmitted if handled alone, meaning you will lose your investment in government study fees. More importantly, you will lose 2 to 3 months and run the high risk of not being able to travel on your pre-purchased vacation dates.

The frustration and stress involved in doing this process alone are immense; we do not recommend it to anyone—not even tech-savvy individuals or foreign attorneys.

Any Colombian immigration attorney can leverage their experience to make the process smoother and free of bottlenecks. Even if unexpected requirements arise, you can rest assured knowing an expert is in charge.

6. Why is Colombian Passport Your Best Choice?

Because tourist visas for restricted nationalities involve a high degree of consular discretion, submitting a file with the slightest translation error, formatting mistake, or lack of solvency will result in an immediate inadmission.

By working with Colombian Passport, you secure your investment:

  • No Middlemen: Your case will be analyzed and led directly by me or one of the firm's Senior lawyers.

  • Tech-Driven Auditing: We analyze your bank statements from the last 6 months and your travel plans in real-time to mathematically verify that they comply with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' demands before submitting.

  • Adaptive Strategy: If the government issues a confusing requirement, our team will answer it and manage your reapplication without charging you additional legal fees.
