When applying for a Colombian visa through the government's online platform (SITAC), one of the mandatory steps is selecting the consulate or office through which you will apply. This is known as determining your jurisdiction or domicile.

Historically, many expats assumed they could choose almost any consulate simply out of convenience. However, at Colombian Passport, we have noticed a significant shift in the strictness of consular officials—a trend that has just crossed the Atlantic.

The Precedent: Strictness in the United States

For some time now, Colombian consulates in the United States have significantly increased their level of scrutiny to verify that the applicant has a genuine connection to the jurisdiction they selected on the platform.

It is very common for the government to send an official requirement demanding proof that the foreign national actually resides within the coverage area of that specific consulate.

For the first time, we have received a requirement demanding this exact proof of domicile from a consulate outside the United States. Specifically, the Colombian Consulate in Rome, Italy, has joined this trend of strict verification.

This marks an important precedent in how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is evaluating applications globally.

What Does This Mean for Your Visa Process?

If you are planning to apply for your Colombian visa (whether it's a Pensioner, Digital Nomad, Spouse, or Investor visa) from abroad, you must keep the following in mind:

• Do not choose your consulate at random: Strictly select the consulate that has jurisdiction over your current place of residence.

• Be proactive with your evidence: Do not wait for the government to send you a requirement, as you will only have 10 days to respond. Include an official document in your initial application that proves your residence (such as a valid driver's license with your address, a utility bill in your name, or a lease agreement).

• Consistency is key: If your passport is from one country, but you reside in another and are applying from that third country, make sure you have the legal status (visa or residency) to be there and provide proof of it in your application.
