Mandatory Transfer of Your Colombian Resident Visa: Avoid Losing Your ID Before October 2026

If you have built your life in Colombia and obtained your Permanent Resident Visa (Type R) a few years ago, this information is critical for your peace of mind and the legality of your status in the country.
I understand that dealing with immigration resolutions and regulations can be exhausting and cause anxiety, especially when you have already made the effort to obtain your permanent residency.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a directive (Resolution 9316 of 2024) that requires our attention, and yesterday updated the deadline: all resident visas granted under previous regulations must be transferred to the new regulation before October 31, 2026.
Below, I translate what this means for you in practical terms and how we can resolve it without friction or headaches.
What exactly is the "Visa Transfer" and why is it mandatory?
Immigration regulations in Colombia were profoundly updated (initially with Resolution 5477 of 2022 and now reinforced with Resolution 9316 of 2024). As a result, the Government needs to standardize all old visas to the new system and format.
The "transfer" does not mean that you lose your right to residency; rather, it is a mandatory update of your registry and your document, if your visa was issued before the end of 2022.
Consequences of not transferring on time
If you ignore this call from the Chancellery and miss the deadline of October 31, 2026, you will face a major problem: Migración Colombia will not issue or renew your Cédula de Extranjería (Foreigner ID).
Without a valid cédula de extranjería, your daily life in Colombia is paralyzed. You will not be able to:
Perform banking transactions (open accounts, apply for loans, international transfers).
Sign contracts (leasing, purchasing properties).
Affiliate with or receive services from the health system (EPS/Prepaid Medicine).
Enter and leave the country without potential questioning or fines at immigration checkpoints.
What is the process like and how do we protect you from bureaucracy?
The Chancellery has established that this process is 100% virtual through its platform. However, as an expert immigration lawyer, I know that government platforms are often confusing, have glitches, or reject applications if a document (such as a scanned passport or a photo) does not meet the exact weight and format requirements.
My goal at Colombian Passport is to be your protective shield against this bureaucracy. You do not have to exhaust yourself trying to understand the Ministry's platform.
Our process is simple:
Audit of your case: We verify the current status of your R visa and your history.
Impeccable preparation: We adjust all your technical documents so they meet the Chancellery's strict standards.
Complete management: We file the transfer application and monitor the process until the electronic visa is issued.
Check the status of your R Visa right now
I have designed this free tool so you can evaluate if you need to perform this procedure urgently. Use it and discover your next steps.
Your peace of mind is priceless: Take the next step
Do not wait until September 2026 when the Chancellery system collapses due to the sheer volume of foreigners trying to do the transfer at the last minute.
