The LegalTech Revolution in Colombia: Colombian Passport Launches SOFI, the AI Copilot for Migrants
2026-06-15
The process of obtaining a visa to live and work legally in Colombia has historically been marked by uncertainty, stress, and endless paperwork. However, the immigration landscape has just taken a leap into the future. Colombian Passport, a leading immigration law firm, has announced that its first clients are already operating through SOFI.
This advanced web platform, developed in-house, is not just a document management tool; it is a complete reengineering of the user experience powered by Artificial Intelligence.
The project has been led by Alejandro Moreno, a Software Engineer with 23 years of experience and co-founder of Colombian Passport, who has designed a software architecture meticulously thought out to empower the final client.
Why is SOFI a game-changer in immigration?
SOFI, built on modern architectures such as React and TypeScript, demystifies the "black box" of visa applications by putting control in the hands of the applicant:
Real-Time AI Auditing: SOFI natively integrates Google's gemini-3.1-pro-preview model. Instead of sending documents and waiting days for a review, the client is the first to receive a technical report from the AI immediately after uploading a file.
The "Human-in-the-Loop" Paradigm: The system is not a relentless judge; it is a copilot. If the AI detects an anomaly, the client decides: they can correct and re-upload the document on the spot, or they can directly request that the firm's team of lawyers perform a manual review of the file.
The Firm's "Brain", Scaled: The true disruption of SOFI is not that it reads public immigration law, but that its AI has been trained with the tacit knowledge and specific criteria of Camila Ocampo, the firm's founder. The system is capable of evaluating those subtle differences between the written rule and the true discretionary criteria applied by Chancellery officials, offering an unprecedented competitive advantage.
Invisible Engineering: While the user navigates, SOFI automatically optimizes PDF files (using the pdf-lib library) to comply with the strict file size limitations demanded by the Colombian government, safeguarding all information under Firebase's secure infrastructure.
With SOFI, the Colombian Passport legal team receives pre-validated and optimized expedients, allowing them to focus their talent 100% on the legal strategy to obtain their clients' visas. The new era of global mobility to Colombia has begun.
Interview: Behind the Code with Alejandro Moreno
To delve deeper into this innovation, our team spoke with Alejandro Moreno, the Software Architect behind SOFI and cofounder of colombianpassport.com.
Interviewer: Alejandro, we know that the term "AI" is heavily used today as a marketing strategy. What makes SOFI's engine truly a robust LegalTech tool and not just a "PDF reader"?
Alejandro Moreno: Let me give you an example of this: Active Cross-Validation. The system first processes the user's passport and extracts their official name using computer vision. Then, over 30% of the Chancellery form is auto-filled, and that data becomes the anchor of truth. The AI rigorously cross-references that identity against every subsequent document—bank statements, health insurance policies, criminal records—guaranteeing that everything unequivocally belongs to the applicant. This drastically reduces the risk of a rejection by the Chancellery due to name inconsistencies, which is very common in immigration law.
Interviewer: Speaking of the user experience, you mention a "Super PDF Optimizer". Why was it necessary to invest hours of engineering into something that at first glance seems as basic as compressing a file?
AM: It seems basic until you face government platforms. The Colombian Chancellery has very severe weight and format restrictions for uploading expedients. Previously, clients or lawyers wasted hours trying to compress documents without making them illegible using tools like I Love PDF. With the integration of pdf-lib in SOFI, the system automatically redesigns, compresses, and validates files in the background. The client simply uploads their high-quality document, and our system ensures it meets the government's technical standards, without friction.
Interviewer: It is mentioned that SOFI completely replaces the operational use previously held in databases like Airtable. How do you manage visa requirements that are constantly changing?
AM: Correct, we went from using Airtable to our own real-time database using Firestore. This allowed us to create a segregated environment for the client and the lawyer.
Interviewer: Regulations, and above all, the criteria of the officials change constantly. How is SOFI kept up to date?
AM: In the Legal Dashboard, Camila can dynamically manage the visa catalog and its requirements. There she finds the specific prompt that the AI uses to evaluate each requirement for each visa. This way, if she notices a new trend among officials regarding how a requirement is evaluated, they can insert it into that prompt. As an engineer, I value this highly because it means the business rules the AI follows are not hard-coded into the system, and I can focus on scaling the platform to serve all Colombian Passport clients.
Interviewer: There are already clients using the platform. What feedback have they provided?
AM: They weren't expecting it. They aren't used to receiving such a modern service from a law firm, especially in Colombia; we've surprised even the most early adopters of AI, such as digital nomads. However, we are in the early stages, and what we are doing is leveraging all their feedback to make SOFI + the Colombian Passport lawyers the ideal solution to the headache of legal immigration to Colombia.
Interviewer: What is the future of SOFI?
AM: We are working on turning SOFI into a 100% agentic app. Currently, it feels like a traditional system but with dialog boxes nourished by an AI that knows exactly how to help you achieve the desired results. I built it this way because I am obsessed with order, and Camila, being a lawyer, is too. I didn't want just any information structure; I wanted a structure that would allow us to have a robust system to manage thousands of clients and govern the business rules based 100% on Camila's knowledge.
However, the future looks 100% agentic, and in fact, I hope we can completely change our customer service for some clients. For Digital Nomad profiles, their first step with us will no longer be a personal consultation with Camila or the lawyers, but with SOFI. They will pay a fraction of what a consultation costs, and in return, they will get the exact same result, but at any time of day, any day of the year, and without Camila's tight schedule.
For other clients, such as Pensioners or Investors, I don't think SOFI will migrate to much more than an exquisitely operated paralegal service, designed to provide better customer service and free up the lawyers' time.
