New Daily Scheduling System for the Cédula de Extranjería 2026
2026-04-16
If you’ve just received your Colombian visa approval, congratulations! However, as an immigration lawyer, I know the celebration is often cut short when you face the mandatory next step: obtaining your Cédula de Extranjería (Foreigner ID).
Since October 2025, when Migración Colombia implemented the mandatory pre-registration, we have seen hundreds of expats get frustrated staring at their screens. Now, in April 2026, the rules of the game have changed once again in an attempt to streamline the process.
I am Camila Ocampo an Immigration Lawyer. My goal today is to explain exactly how this new daily scheduling works, debunk the myths about the "new" platform, and give you a clear strategy so you can comply with the law without losing your peace of mind.
Goodbye Sundays: The New Daily Appointment Model
Until recently, the golden rule we shared in our previous guides was to religiously log on Sundays at 4:59 p.m. to try to secure a slot for the following week.
Although it’s often said that the old system caused months of waiting, the technical reality is that inexperienced expats were dealing with an unstable tool with high demand and very low supply, meaning slots vanished in minutes.
I believe that foreigners can master the platform in 3 or 4 attempts, but the real problem isn't the wait or the frustration—it's the legal urgency.
Colombian regulations are strict: you have a maximum deadline of 15 calendar days after your entry into Colombia to apply for your Cédula.
To alleviate this pressure, starting in April 2026, appointments are now released daily:
When? From Sunday to Thursday, exactly at 5:00 p.m.
For when? The system only opens available slots for the very next business day.
The Truth About the "New" Platform
Recently, a press release from Migración Colombia caused confusion by suggesting there is a "new electronic headquarters" for this procedure. To ensure you don't waste time looking in the wrong place, let's clarify the official links:
Where you book the appointment: It is still the external Odoo-based platform launched in October 2025: https://migracioncolombia.odoo.com/. Pre-registration there remains 100% mandatory. Do not look for another scheduling link; this is it.
Where you find information: Migración Colombia launched a new, much more visual portal to explain requirements: https://portal.migracioncolombia.gov.co/. It is useful for reading, but it is not the platform for booking.
Intermediaries or Experts? Why the System is Still a Challenge
Migración Colombia frequently states that these changes aim to "eliminate intermediaries who hoard appointments." It is important to understand that, technically, it is impossible for anyone to "hoard" appointments.
Every slot must be obligatorily linked to a real, approved visa and passport number. If a person shows up to an appointment with a different ID or visa than the one used to book it, they simply aren't allowed in.
The reason our clients prefer us to manage their appointments is not because of "privileged access" or because we have hidden slots, but because of the system's instability.
The Migración platform usually crashes at 5:00:01 p.m. Learning to navigate it and securing the slot requires technical dexterity gained only through daily practice.
At Colombian Passport, we continue to handle this step for our clients at no additional cost. We consider it our job to act as your shield against bureaucracy: we take on the 5:00 p.m. stress to ensure you meet the 15-day legal deadline.
If You Decide to Do It Yourself, Follow This Step-by-Step:
Pre-registration: Don't wait until you have your visa to create your account at https://migracioncolombia.odoo.com. Do it today.
Logistics: Do not use your phone for this; use a computer. Be patient—the system will likely crash, but you can get through.
Instructions:
Refresh the page exactly at 5:00 p.m. (or a few minutes before).
Choose the city and select the very first option you see (you will see availability by time ranges). Note: If you've tried many times to get an appointment in Medellín, Bogotá, or Cali and failed, try choosing a nearby intermediate city.
Choose mid-day slots. Early morning and late afternoon are the most sought-after. Warning: The system takes seconds to load once it's saturated.
When you finally find availability, on the next screen, do not read—confirm immediately. Once confirmed, then read to ensure the location, time, and personal details are correct.
If you made a mistake, you must cancel your appointment and start over.
