Attention, U.S. Veterans! Your Dream Retirement Awaits in Colombia: Pensioner Visa Guide

2025-07-16

Last Updated: February 9, 2026

Did you serve your country with honor and are now seeking a retirement that truly reflects your dedication?

If you are a retired U.S. military member tired of the routine, the rising cost of living, or harsh winters, I have news for you. More and more American veterans are discovering Colombia not just as a travel destination, but as the ideal headquarters for a fulfilling "second act."

I’m Camila Ocampo, founder of Colombian Passport, and I have helped hundreds of expats transition smoothly to life in Colombia. I know that after a career of discipline and service, you don’t want bureaucratic chaos—you want a mission plan that works.

The Pensioner Visa (Type M) is that plan.

Why Colombia is the Strategic Choice for US Veterans

Beyond the eternal spring of Medellín or the historic walls of Cartagena, there is a pragmatic reality that resonates with the military mindset: Strategic Resource Optimization.

  1. Your Pension Goes Further: Your USD military pension (VA, DFAS, etc.) holds immense purchasing power here. In 2026, the exchange rate continues to favor the dollar, allowing you to access a lifestyle—housing, healthcare, dining—that would cost triple in the U.S.

  2. Top-Tier Healthcare: Many veterans worry about health. Colombia’s major cities host clinics ranked among the best in Latin America.

  3. A Brotherhood Abroad: You won’t be alone. There is a robust, growing community of U.S. veterans in Colombia who have already established a network of support and camaraderie.

The Pensioner Visa (Type M): Your Legal Framework

Based on Resolution 5477 of 2022, the Migrant Visa (Type M) for Pensioners is designed for foreigners who receive a regular, life-long retirement income from a public or private entity abroad.

Here is the tactical breakdown of this visa:

  • Duration: Up to three (3) years.

  • The Path to Residency: This is crucial. This visa allows you to accumulate time toward a Resident Visa (Type R). You must hold the Pensioner Visa (M) for 5 years before you are eligible to apply for permanent residency.

  • Beneficiaries: You can include your spouse and dependent children in this application.

The 2026 Financial Requirements (Official Figures)

As of 2026, the Colombian government has set the Minimum Legal Monthly Wage (SMLMV) at $1,746,882 COP.

To qualify for the Pensioner Visa, you must prove a monthly income of three (3) times the minimum wage.

  • Required Monthly Income (COP): $5,240,646 COP.

  • What this means in USD: Depending on the exchange rate, this fluctuates, but typically, a pension above $1,450 USD is a safe baseline to ensure eligibility regardless of currency volatility. Most US military pensions comfortably exceed this threshold.

The "Must-Have" Documents

To avoid rejection (inadmissibility), your dossier must be precise. Based on our experience at Colombian Passport, these are the non-negotiables:

  • Certification of Pension: A certificate issued by the government entity (VA, DFAS, Social Security) paying the retirement. It must state the monthly amount and that it is for life. Crucial: This document must be Apostilled in the U.S.

  • Criminal Background Check: An FBI Background Check issued within the last 6 months. Crucial: This must be Apostilled in the U.S. and then translated into Spanish by an official translator in Colombia.

  • Medical Insurance Policy: You must provide proof of an international medical insurance policy that explicitly states it provides coverage within Colombian territory. It must cover risks including accident, illness, maternity, disability, death, and repatriation. Note: This is distinct from local Colombian health coverage (EPS).

  • Passport Validity: Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining and blank pages.

Transparent Costs (Government Fees)

We believe in total transparency. These are the official government fees you will pay directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) for a Type M Visa:

  • Study Fee: $54 USD (Non-refundable, paid to initiate the process).

  • Issuance Fee: $270 USD (Paid only after approval).

  • Cédula de Extranjería: After visa approval, you must register for your local ID. The cost is approximately $260,000 COP (roughly $80 USD).

Your Mission Starts Now

Start Your Next Chapter with Confidence

Whether the calculator gave you a "Green Light" or a specific warning, the most important takeaway is this: Immigration is about detail and strategy.

While the numbers are important, the success of your visa often depends on the things a calculator can't predict: the correct wording of your letters, the precise apostille on your documents, and presenting your case in a way that the Ministry understands and accepts.

At Colombian Passport, our job is to handle that complexity for you. We take care of the bureaucracy—the translations, the forms, and the legal strategy—so you can focus on the only thing that matters: planning your new life in Colombia.

I look forward to welcoming you here very soon.

Warm regards,
