Colombia Residency by Investment: How Much Do You Need to Invest in 2025?

2025-01-23

Colombia has emerged as a top destination for foreign investors seeking residency and a high quality of life. The country's Golden Visa program, officially known as the Investor Visa and the Partner-Owner Visa, offers a pathway to residency for those willing to make a significant financial contribution to the Colombian economy. But how much do you need to invest to qualify?

"The Colombian Investor Visa and the Colombian Partner-Owner Visa are attractive options for foreigners seeking residency," says Camila Ocampo, a leading immigration lawyer in Colombia. "However, navigating the requirements and application process can be complex. It's crucial to understand the investment options and choose the path that best suits your individual circumstances."

Colombia Investment Visa Requirements

Both visas fall under the Migrant Visa (M) category and have specific investment requirements. There are three main paths to qualify:

  • Investor Visa:

  • General Investment: You can obtain residency by bringing money to Colombia through a foreign direct investment, without a single purpose. The money can be in a savings account, some other financial vehicle such as a CDT, furniture, vehicles, etc. In this modality, it is required to demonstrate an investment of 650 times the current legal monthly minimum wage in Colombia. This is currently is $925,275,000 COP wich is equivalent to $222,066 USD.

  • Real Estate Investment: To obtain residency through real estate investment, foreigners must invest at least 350 times the current legal monthly minimum wage in Colombia in one or more properties. This currently is $498,225,000 COP that equates to approximately $119,574 USD.

  • Partner-Owner Visa:

  • Investment in a Colombian Company: Foreigners can invest in a Colombian company. The minimum investment for this option is 100 times the current legal monthly minimum wage in Colombia, which is $142,350,000 COP; it is currently around $34.164 USD.

Colombia Citizenship by Investment

It's important to note that the Investor Visa does not lead to immediate Colombian citizenship. However, after holding the visa for five years and meeting other requirements, investors may be eligible to apply for Accumulated Time Resident Visa. Then, five years later, Residents could apply for a Colombian Citizenship.

Seeking Expert Guidance

While it's possible to apply for the Colombian Investor Visa independently, the process can be intricate and requires careful attention to detail. Seeking guidance from an expert immigration lawyer, like Camila Ocampo, can significantly increase your chances of success.

"A common mistake is underestimating the complexity of the process," adds Ocampo. "Working with an experienced lawyer ensures your application is complete, accurate, and submitted correctly, minimizing the risk of delays or rejection."
