How to Apply for the Colombia Digital Nomad Visa: Technical Guide (2026)

2026-04-27

Applying for the Digital Nomad Visa in Colombia (Type V) is a 100% online process. You do not have to stand in lines, travel to Bogotá, or hand in physical folders. Everything happens through the Cancillería portal.

Sounds easy, right? The reality is that the digital system is full of technical traps and legal loopholes that cause hundreds of rejections.

As an immigration lawyer and your legal strategist at Colombian Passport, I have merged into this guide all our most important empirical findings and technical secrets so your application is bulletproof.

1. The SITAC Portal: The Weight and Time Trap

The Sistema Integral de Trámites al Ciudadano (SITAC) is your first major hurdle. Here are the technical rules nobody tells you about:

  • The 10-Minute Timeout: The portal will log you out if you spend more than 10 minutes without interacting with it. Have all your data ready to copy and paste.

  • The 5 MB Barrier (Total): The most frustrating error. It’s not that each PDF can weigh 5 MB; it’s that your entire combined application cannot exceed 5 MB.

  • The 35-Page Limit: The system will bounce any application that totals more than 35 pages across all your documents. You must strategically compress and summarize your bank statements without losing their legal validity.

  • The "Selfie" Mistake: The Cancillería demands a professional passport-style photo (white background, no shadows). It must be a JPG and weigh a maximum of 300 KB. A photo taken with your phone in your living room is grounds for automatic inadmission.

  • The Unscanned Passport: Your application will be inadmissible if you just take a picture of your passport with your mobile phone. If you are going to use your phone, make sure to use a high-quality scanning app without watermarks.

2. The Consular Secret: Translations and Apostilles

  • If you apply from within Colombia, you will have to apostille your criminal record.

  • If you apply from somewhere else, make sure to choose the correct consulate according to your legal "jurisdiction" (circunscripción); this will save you hundreds of dollars and weeks of processing. If you are applying from the US, here is a tool that makes it easy to find your consulate (because the Cancillería's website makes it very difficult to figure out which one is yours): Which Colombian Consulate in the US Should I Use? A State-by-State Guide

  • Colombian law requires all foreign documents to be apostilled and officially translated. However, we have proven that if you apply through specific consulates like Miami, New York, Houston, San Francisco, Toronto, Italy, or the Czech Republic, it is highly likely that they will waive the official translation requirement.

3. "Hidden" Requirements and Safety Margins

Following the letter of the law is sometimes not enough; you must understand how the officials think:

  • The Invisible Criminal Record: The official resolution does not mention a criminal background check as a mandatory requirement for nomads. But, in practice, it is an unwritten rule. Officials almost always ask for it. Get ahead of them and upload it to avoid official requests (requerimientos). Keep in mind that if you are in Colombia, you will have to request it by sending your physical fingerprints. This whole process can take 3 weeks.

  • The Income Margin ($1,450 USD): The law requires 3 Colombian minimum wages (for 2026, the minimum is $1,746,882 COP). But the dollar is volatile, and the final value will be dictated by the exchange rate on the exact day the official reviews your application.

4. Passport and Health Insurance Strategy

Do you want your visa approved for the maximum of 2 years and avoid future headaches?

  • The Passport Validity: The law asks for 6 months of validity. Don't do it! If your passport expires in 8 months, it is very possible that your visa will be issued tied to that exact expiration date.

  • The 2-Year Insurance: The Ministry usually grants the same visa duration as your health insurance policy. Buy a 2-year policy upfront if you wish to obtain that duration. Additionally, the document must include: emergency medical care, accidents, hospitalization and repatriation of remains.

Knowing these details is the difference between living peacefully in Colombia or facing continuous inadmissions and investing $54 USD for every single one of them.
